Greeks held to unfair standard

By PATRICK DUFFEY, Acting President, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity
That didn't take long. Call me cynical, but I'm not surprised the Alligator editorial board has started holding Greeks to a separate standard from other students just a week into the fall semester. Underage drinking is illegal. So is smoking pot. But is what happened at Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity any different from what probably happened at dozens of Gainesville apartments that same night?

The police and the university are doing their jobs, but does it seem a little ridiculous to anyone else that the Alligator is condemning other students for lighting up and boozing? Pi Lam had a few bongs and some beer. The brothers weren't mainlining black tar heroin while swigging moonshine they brewed in a bathtub.

Wait, maybe stronger regulations will fix the "problem" because more rules and more control are always the answer, as long as they apply only to Greeks. The editorial board, seemingly endlessly concerned with the missteps of the Greek community, has suggested taking a proactive approach; I agree - the Alligator should set an example for once and begin random drug testing of its editors and staff writers. After all, "it starts at a universitywide level."

Correction

The UF-Georgia football game is held annually at the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The contract for the game is between UF and the city of Jacksonville. An article in Tuesday’s paper stated otherwise.

" The premise of this article is totally stupid. They were on campus were you should be held to a higher standard. Yes many people use drugs but not in university funded groups!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want to be held to the same standard give back all the SG funds move off campus and start a private enterprise of drug users. Maybe Duffy should stop trying to rape 17 year old and go to class!!! "

" why do you care if other people smoke pot or drink excessively? It is their choice. It is none of your business what people do with their own time, especially behind closed doors. This is college, not a political debate. If they are not operating a motor vehicle, you should worry about something else. I suspect that you are unhappy with your own life. "Pay to get friends." Please man. That is all you got. What a joke "

" What Duffey says is true, it's all fun for the Alligator to mock a fraternity for getting caught smoking, but imagining that their editorial board could pass a collective drug test is a joke. The Alligator? Hypocrites? Say it ain't so. "

" Just for clarification, no greek letter organization under IFC or Panhellenic recieves SG funds to run their organizations. We fund ourselves. Get your facts straight. The point Duffy was trying to make, of the hundreds of students getting caught for drinking or lighting up, why do we find a need to target the greek community constantly. For every one mistake we make, there are hundred of good things we have done on campus and off, yet no one chooses to focus on these events, just the police scanner. All this does is unnecessarily create even more separation between greeks and non-greeks. "

" If you break the law or rules and get caught, its your problem. If you dont like the laws and rules, VOTE for change. If your opinion isnt the current law or rule abide by it, or suffer from the situation 'you' placed yourself in. Breaking a rule or law and getting caught is "you" being sloppy. So why compare yourself or your Greek community to others on campus, they obviously know how to keep things behind closed doors and to themselves. Invest your extra funds on some soap on the rope..... enjoy the Greek limelight... "

" My son who is in a fraternity says that the frat members must have a higher grade point average than the non-Greek student populace. What kind of stupid standard is that? "
