McCain’s tax policy inferior to Obama’s

By Travis Baker, Publicity Chair, College Democrats
A letter to the editor in Wednesday’s paper described Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain’s economic plan as sound.

While these claims were full of McCain’s qualitative merits, the only quantifiable data provided was that the plan was “signed–off” by 300 economists. Interesting.

The consent of 300 economists is no basis for a “sound” plan that will benefit Americans, especially students.

To comprehend Republican economic failures, one only needs to look at the Republican–sponsored Florida Homestead Exemption Amendment.

UF students are seeing their hometown elementary schools firing teachers and sharply increasing class sizes, all while raising taxation inequality among homeowners.

McCain’s Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, will implement a smarter tax plan that will benefit the middle class through investment in schools and tax cuts for you and me, not CEOs and billionaires.

Correction

The UF-Georgia football game is held annually at the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The contract for the game is between UF and the city of Jacksonville. An article in Tuesday’s paper stated otherwise.

" According to the statements in this ill-advised McCain bash, I believe a brief lesson in McCain's fiscal rhetoric is necessary.
First of all, in this conclusion the myth that the Bush tax cut of 2001 is alluded to. This is no more than Liberal propoganda generated to discredit Republicans. According to the National Center for Policy Analysis, "the top one percent of income earners pay more than one in every three dollars the IRS collects in taxes". Since the Bush tax cuts have been implemented, the percentage of income the bottom fifth of tax filers paid in federal income taxes has dropped from 0.4 percent to zero.
As for quantifiable data, McCain has provided policies based on actual methods for implementation rather than blind prospects such as "hope" and "change". When McCain addresses the Nation with ideas such as his pro-growth tax policies, he uses numbers such as maintaining the 15% rates on capital gains and cutting corporate tax rates from 35 to 25% which would stimulate domestic companies and create jobs. There is definately a reason that 300 economists are offering their suport to McCain. They know that McCain has not only bright ideas, but has the strength to fight the obstacles and break through the status quo to make real change in America and not just use "change" to decorate his podium.
Lastly, I find it rather amusing that everyone who tries to discredit McCain's position on the economy always fails to mention the fact that he is one of the only people in the government that actually fights against wasteful spending and costly, unnecessary government programs. Obama talks about creating a "fair and efficient" government but why has he not done anything so far in the Senate? That's easy, because in Congress, it is not politically expedient to tackle government spending because everyone wants to be able to throw in a few million dollars to their home town. Now on the executive stage, it looks good to work for a more transparent government void of unnecessary spending. "

" myth in previous statement is the myth that Bush tax cuts only benefit the wealthy. "

" jzwick you are right on about MCcain and his economic policies. You raise an interesting point about Obama, why hasn't he done anything in the Senate? Also, why would we want a man to lead this country who hobnobs with unrepentant anti american domestic terrorist William Ayers, trash talks guns and religion, attends a church with a racist and hateful pastor and has almost zero experience in anything but flowery speech making and vague promises of the "hope" and "change"? I imagine that you will probably be casting a vote for John MCcain this November and I wil let you know that I will do the same without a shred of doubt or regret. I think America under MCcain and American under Obama would be two different Americas. Obamas America makes me shudder to think about. "
