Suicide attempt proves false alarm for UPD

A student talking on a cell phone on the roof of Sisler Hall brought about a dozen University Police officers to the scene Monday afternoon in response to a possible suicide attempt.
UPD Sgt. Hank Spurlin said someone at Dauer Hall, which is across the street from Sisler, called UPD and reported that a person who looked like a student was on the roof talking on a cell phone.
Spurlin said the student was gone when the officers arrived. After questioning two other people who fit the student’s description, officers found the student and learned he had been on the roof enjoying the nice weather, not contemplating suicide.

“It was much to do about nothing,” Spurlin said.
After being questioned by police, Austin Norden, the student on the roof, said in an interview he was taking a break from his organic chemistry professor’s office hours.
“I kind of go up there periodically,” said Norden, a health science junior. “It’s just nice. It’s calm up there, great view of the campus.”
Spurlin said Norden didn’t break any laws but was referred to Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution for violating the Student Conduct Code.
“I’m not suicidal at all, so it … didn’t even cross my mind,” he said, “but apparently it’s a big deal on the UF campus with finals and all.”
