Agent Carter slays Marvel records on ABC

Marvel’s new Agent Carter mini series is like tossing a bone to a starving dog. For years and years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have been begging for a female-led anything.

Agent Carter is literally the first.

The plot takes place in 1946, after Steve Rogers crashes his ship into the ocean and supposedly dies. The war ends and Howard Stark is accused of selling weapons to the enemy. Then Peggy agrees to help him clear his name.

Agent Carter debuted on January 6. It’s already been awarded a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, described as “ridiculously enjoyable” with “clever writing and engaging action.”

Peggy is a hero in her own right. She doesn’t need powers to be super. She’s not out to prove herself to her male coworkers – she’s content to let them underestimate her so she can use her femininity to manipulate them. She also knocks out a thug with a stapler and diffuses a bomb using household cleaning items. Very satisfying.

The 1940’s aesthetic of the show is captured perfectly with the diner-and-swing-music atmosphere and period-piece clothing. Peggy is the stoic, strong hero and Jarvis, Stark’s British butler, is the sidekick who drives her places and sews up her wounds. In this show, Peggy is the one bathed in light, kicking butt, while the men she works with bumble around in her wake.

Possibly the best thing about the show is the way Peggy is allowed to mourn Steve without being turned into a weeping willow. Like many Marvel heroes, she struggles with the side effects of her dangerous job – namely, friends and loved ones getting hurt.

Agent Carter has fleshed out its characters more in four episodes than Agents of SHIELD did in an entire season. The show, if you haven’t seen it yet, is definitely worth watching.
