Love it or hate it: Wedge sneakers

Wedge sneakers
Wedge sneakers

Wedge sneaker. No, I did not make a typo. These two words actually go together to describe one real item. I was shocked to see that this shoe-hybrid was a real thing and not something out of my nightmares. However, I was even more confused to see that this mullet of footwear was actually considered a serious trend to follow.

Designers like Marc Jacobs, Jeffrey Campbell and even Nike are producing versions of this shoe. From brights and neons to studs and spikes the wedge sneaker is making its way around the fashion world.

Even with its newfound fame, it still doesn’t make sense. A sneaker is supposed to be comfortable and casual, while a wedge shoe is meant to dress up an outfit. So, what exactly is the functionality of the wedge sneaker? Maybe the point is to look taller while maintaing some casualness. Or could it be that it is supposed to dress up an outfit and still be comfortable. I honestly do not know.

From a distance there are some wedge sneakers that could pass for their predecessor, the sneaker. Then, there are some that are just outrageous. Kind of like a sneaker on a vaulted platform resembling something related to footwear made famous by the Spice Girls in the 90s. Do people really want to spice up their feet with this interesting choice of shoe? Whatever the reasons are behind this Frankenstein creation, I still cannot grasp its popularity.

If you’re still perplexed by this whole shoe issue, here’s one way to rationalize things. Just because it’s considered trendy or fashionable doesn’t mean it’s also stylish.
