Fashion is sometimes ridiculed for being superficial and selfish, as it is “just for looks”. I strongly believe that fashion encompasses much more than these stereotypical notions. Fashion can help people in more ways than one; besides boosting confidence and making people feel special, the Fashion Industry Association (FIA) of Tampa is showing people that fashion can truly make a difference in thousands of lives.

On July 27, FIA is teaming up with Cheap Restaurant & Bar to host a fashion show and art gala benefitting relief efforts for flood survivors in Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia. According to BBC World News, the Balkan floods have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and the full extent of the damage is not yet known.  Alma Vidovic, FIA founder and one of the fashion designers in the fashion show was impacted emotionally by the devastation, as she is Bosnian. Vidovic commented, “It’s been devastating to see over 100,000 homes, schools, and businesses washed away in a moment. I want to show as much support as possible.”

Along with Vidovic, several of the other contributing professionals to this event come from Bosnian, Serbian or Croatian decent. This fashion show benefitting the Balkan flood survivors not only brought them together, but also brought many other contributors in their community together, creating a united front for an important cause.

The Fashion and Art Gala Fundraiser for Flood Relief will be held on July 27 at 5 PM at Cheap Restaurant & Bar in Tampa.  Check out the Facebook event page  and join now on the FIA website to reserve a spot, as space will be limited. It will feature fashions by three Tampa designers, an art show, music performances, a silent auction and a chance to network with prominent young professionals in the Tampa area. Show your support by using the hashtags #CroatiaFloods, #BosniaFloods, #SerbiaFloods.

The FIA and Cheap Restaurant are proving that fashion can be about much more than just looking good. Vidovic and the rest of the contributors are proving that, from thousands of miles away, fashion can save thousands of lives.
