Now that's justice: Mary Lambert's musical message

Has anyone heard the new hit single playing on their radio — besides the entirety of the new Taylor Swift album? It’s a completely awesome song called "Secrets," and it was created by the amazingly talented and passionate singer-songwriter Mary Lambert.

The song is catchy, cute and easy to jam out to in your car, but it also holds an empowering message about being proud of your true self and the myriad of different parts that make up every individual, even the parts we’d sometimes rather keep hidden.

"Secrets" is a song that celebrates the complicated and self-centered insecurities of our generation and asks each us to be shameless about who we are. However, Lambert has been singing, creating beautiful poetry, and promoting LGBTQ+ and women’s rights movements for a long time.

Her art is a haunting blend of spoken word poetry and music, and her message is one that more singers today should think about endorsing. Lambert sings and speaks of equality, of having a positive self-image about your body and of accepting yourself.

Her two-part music video for the emotionally gripping spoken word poem “Body Love” will bring tears to your eyes with its raw vulnerability and uncomplicated message of love and hope. She openly bares her soul and her secrets on the stage, and speaks out for victims of trauma and individuals who have struggled with mental illness and negative body images.

In today’s pop music scene, more and more celebrities are coming forth with their opinions on social justice, such as Lorde and Swift. Likewise, in the movie scene people like Ellen Page, who recently revealed her sexual orientation, are expressing support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Lambert is another singer in today’s pop music industry who has taken the opportunity to use her talent, music and art to send a message of social consciousness and responsibility — one more important than the usual flashy, yet shallow pop songs that are most often on the radio’s Top Hits playlist.

“Heart on my Sleeve” is available now. I recommend you take time to listen to her words today, whether it’s to gain a new perspective on social issues or simply to regain a little confidence in how beautiful humanity can be.
