A new rolled ice cream business will sweeten summer when its doors first open Tuesday.

Atlanta-based 8 Fahrenheit Ice Cream is setting up its first Florida shop at 2905 42nd St., said Aakash Shah, the owner of the rolled ice cream business. Shah said a grand opening will be held Sept. 14 and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, free ice cream and special promotions lasting through Sept. 17.

The store will give away free ice cream after the grand opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. and continue offering 50 percent off for students, free ice cream for kids 12-years-old and under and free T-shirts through Sept. 17, Shah  said.

The new store will compete with Gainesville’s first rolled ice cream location, Mr. Cool Ice Cream, located at 1025 W. University Ave.

The 8 Fahrenheit store, opening near Butler Plaza, will have six ice cream flavors and over 20 toppings, as well as 15 preset menu items, Shah said. The store’s selected menu items include “Matcha Lady,” a matcha green tea ice cream mixed with strawberry; “8F Latte,” made from coffee brewed daily; and cheesecake. Ice cream will be sold as one size for $5.50 plus tax, with three free toppings.

Jessika Ruman, a UF wildlife ecology and conservation junior, said she plans to attend the grand opening and savor the free rolled ice cream.

“Everybody likes sweet things, especially when they’re stressing for classes,” the 20-year-old said.
