Students in need of food or bathroom supplies can get them for free as the school year comes to an end.

UF has established a pantry for students in need, and donations are being encouraged as students prepare to leave for Summer Break, said Susan Webster, a UF student and District A senator.

The UF international studies and business junior said she got the idea for the pantry while she campaigned for Swamp Party last Fall. She asked students what they wanted to see change. One student told her about the struggle to find a next meal.

“There’s a percentage of students who don’t know when their next meal will be,” Webster, 21, said.

She said the pantry will open this summer. She’s working with the UF Division of Student Affairs, the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, UF Student Government and the Office of the Senior Vice President to collect nonperishable food items such as canned goods, unopened bathroom supplies, plastic bags, paper bags and reusable bags.

The food pantry will be located at 564 Newell Drive, Building 476, which is near McCarty Hall and Marston Science Library, wrote Tanja Philhower, associate vice president of UF Student Affairs, in an email.

Items can be dropped off at Southwest Recreation Center on Friday and May 1 from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m.
