Uni Crash
Uni Crash
A UF student died Friday morning as a result of a crash north of UF’s campus, according to a Gainesville Police.

A garbage truck was driving south on Northwest 17th Street, preparing to turn west onto West University Avenue, the preliminary investigation has found, according to a GPD news release. Abigail Dougherty, a 20-year-old UF applied physiology and kinesiology senior, was bicycling southbound on Northwest 17th Street, crossing West University Avenue.

The truck struck and ran over Dougherty, causing fatal injuries, according to the release. It is unclear who had the right of way.

A traffic homicide investigation is being conducted, according to the release. Officers are taking laser measurements, toxicology reports and interviewing witnesses to determine every detail of the crash.

At UF, Dougherty was a Dean of Students ambassador, a Campus Diplomat and worked in the Field and Fork Pantry, wrote Jen Day Shaw, UF’s Dean of Students, in an email.

“Those closest to her shared that she adored working in the Pantry and wished she could find a job full time after graduation doing that kind of work,” Day Shaw said. “She will be greatly missed.”

UF President Kent Fuchs called Dougherty’s death a heart-breaking and tragic loss for UF, in an email statement.

“Our deepest sympathies are extended to Abby’s family, friends and everyone whose lives she touched,” Fuchs said. “Abby will be greatly missed.”

A UF memorial service will likely be held the week of Nov. 7, after Dougherty’s family holds their own service, Day Shaw said.
