An Apple announcement scheduled for Wednesday has people across the nation — and UF’s campus — buzzing about possible new products.

Invitations to the private event feature a large, black “12” — a reference to the date. But the number’s shadow doesn’t match up. It’s a gray “5.”

Pasha Antonenko, an assistant professor of educational technology at UF, said he’s anticipating the announcement. He’s been waiting for the iPhone 5, which is rumored to have a larger display screen and a smaller dock connector, to come out for a while.

But new features aren’t enough for some UF students.

Criminology junior Courtney Marasigan, 20, said she just bought an iPhone 4S, so she’s not likely to purchase a new one if announced next week. Still, Marasigan said she’d rather Apple release a new iPhone than a new iPad.

According to technology blogs, the iPhone 5 will likely be slimmer and lighter than its predecessors.

However, some college students’ budgets often don’t leave room for purchases based solely on updated features.

“I am absolutely content with the iPhone 4,” said 25-year-old environmental science junior Giannette Rodriguez. “I don’t even have the iPhone 4S. The only difference is the Siri.”
