Graduate students stood up for one of their own Thursday.

The Graduate Student Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for a grand jury investigation of the shooting of graduate student Kofi Adu-Brempong by University Police Department officer Keith Smith on March 2. The resolution will be sent to the State Attorney’s Office and the clerk of the Eighth Circuit Court.

Matt Vernon, vice president of the Graduate Student Council, said a grand jury investigation will ensure thoroughness and impartiality.

Vernon said UPD is doing an internal investigation of the shooting, and the university has hired outside investigators.

“Myself and quite a few others feel that this is not the way to go about this, considering the circumstances,” Vernon said.

Members of UPD and colleagues of Adu-Brempong have been ordered not to speak about the incident until the investigations are complete, Vernon said.

“[The grand jury] will be able to subpoena all the people who have been muted and have not been able to speak,” Vernon said.
