Students will discuss overpopulation issues in a TEDx-style talk Friday.
One World UF will host its second annual conference on finding solutions to problems such as overpopulation. Last year, about 300 people attended the talk. This year, the group hopes to increase attendance.
The issue One World UF aims to address is that by 2050, the world’s population is expected to exceed 9.6 billion people, said Anthony Andenoro, the director of One World UF.
The event will include student speakers from UF, professionals from companies such as Siemens and H.M.Clause, a seed company.
There will also be an exhibition combining art and science and innovation stations. Participants can also share their own ideas about solutions to overpopulation, Andenoro said.
“What we know is that if we are going to create interdisciplinary solutions that deal with interdisciplinary problems that affect everyone in our world, we’re going to need as many different minds around the table as possible,” Andenoro said.
Taylor Chaisson, a 20-year-old UF agricultural operations management junior, said she attended the conference last year and joined UF’s Challenge 2050 certificate program, which teaches students to create global change, as a result.
Shiela Chancoco, a UF biology sophomore, said she’ll attend Friday.
“I think it’s important because it’s an issue that’s been ignored, and it’s a current problem” the 20-year-old said.
