Senate President Cory Yeffet, who replaced Lauren Verno, helps lead the first installment of the new senator orientation series prior to Tuesday night’s Student Senate meeting.

As the pomp from election season settled, new Student Senators eased into their new term by learning the Senate basics.

Information and Communications Committee chairwoman Jamie Lowstetter led the first session of the Senate orientation series prior to Tuesday night’s meeting.

The next two sessions will discuss parliamentary procedure and legislative writing.

The first session covered all six Senate committees in hopes of generating applications for open seats.

“We had a great turnout at the first meeting,” Lowstetter said. “We got some good questions from new senators.”

The first two meetings for new senators were softballs: no bill readings, no intense public debate, no bills pending signatures. Tuesday’s highlight was Jillian Roberts’ appointment as the Disabilities Affairs Cabinet director.

During the meeting, seasoned senators gave their best wishes to rookie senators.

Sen. Michael Filipelli advised them to listen to older senators.

“It really is a rewarding experience to be in these chambers and make a difference,” he said.

Newly elected District C Sen. Andre Nunes said he was still getting used to the procedures but found the orientation meeting to be very informative.

“I can’t wait to start leaving my mark on Senate and making a positive change,” he said.
