Gainesville Police arrested a man early Thursday after he reportedly stabbed and slit the throat of another man over a can of beer at Dignity Village.

Shortly before 1 a.m., Donnie Guy Mitchell, 35, began arguing with a man who didn’t give him a beer, according to a police report. Witnesses told police that Mitchell hit the man in the head with a beer can and then slit the man’s throat.

He proceeded to stab the man in the face, neck and torso before running away, according to the report. The man survived.

Police later found Mitchell with bloody hands and a bloody leg.

The man was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital, GPD spokesman Officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email. He is currently in stable condition.

Officers arrested Mitchell on one charge of attempted murder. Police took him to the Alachua County Jail where he remained as of press time in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

The day before at Dignity Village, Gainesville Police arrested another man after he reportedly swung a machete at a crowd of people and cut one of them.

At about 5 p.m., Ronald Packer, 51, began arguing with a man over money, according to a police report.

He then pulled out a machete and began to swing it at the crowd, according to the report. When a second man tried to step in, Packer swung the machete and hit him in the leg, giving the man minor cuts.

Police arrested Packer on one charge of aggravated battery. Officers took him to the Alachua County Jail where he remained as of press time in lieu of a $3,000 bond.
