Gainesville Police arrested a local homeless woman Sunday evening after she beat a man with a dog leash then dumped beer on another woman’s head.

Officers arrested 41-year-old Alicia Chavez on charges of simple battery, resisting an officer, and hindering communication to law enforcement, according to an arrest report.

At about 5 p.m., Chavez grabbed a leash with a metal hook on the end at Southeast 11th Avenue and swung it toward a man, hitting him three times. The leash gave the man a large knot behind his left ear, according to the report.

When a woman told Chavez she was going to call 911, Chavez slammed the woman’s phone to the ground, took the beer the woman was holding out of her hand and poured it on her head.

An officer later told Chavez to remain at the scene, and she took a “fighting stance,” according to the report. Officers placed Chavez in handcuffs and told her to sit down, but she refused. They then had to restrain her with a rip hobble and place her in the back of the police car, where she continued kicking.

Officers booked Chavez into jail, where she remained in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
