Gainesville group to offer feminism theory and history courses

To get at the root cause behind the oppression of women, the Gainesville chapter of National Women’s Liberation will offer 10 consecutive feminism classes beginning today.

The weekly three-hour classes — which are currently full — will focus on radical feminist theory and the history of the women’s liberation movement, said Regan Garner, a member of the group’s steering committee. The classes cost $40 for members and $50 for non-members.

At the end of the courses, which will be held downtown, the participants will likely hold a rally.

Garner said she hopes the classes will inspire women to challenge the patriarchal status quo.

“A lot of people think of radical in different ways, but that’s how we look at it,” she said. “It’s getting to the root of what is oppressing women.”

Garner said these types of courses have not been held since 2011 because the members struggled to find time around their full-time jobs. The next round of courses will hopefully be held next year.

In the current political landscape, feminist theory is important, Garner said.

“We have seen more women wanting to get up and fight back, and that’s what we are looking for,” she said.

Mackenzie Englund, a 20-year-old UF nursing junior, said she has no interest in feminism. She said fighting to fix harmless social norms is a waste of time.

“I think that in the U.S. women have already achieved equal rights with men and now the feminist movement is taking it to extremes,” she said.
