Subway campaign aims to alleviate global water shortage

For every bottle of Dasani water purchased through Aug. 31 at Subway, the restaurant will donate 30 cents to help build a well in Kenya.

The program, called “Fresh Water 4 All,” began July 11.

“Fresh Water 4 All” is more of a local campaign, said Stacy Kader, the vice president of Asher Agency, which manages the promotion for Gainesville Subway locations.

All Gainesville locations are participating, except for those on campus, according to an on-campus Subway employee who declined to give his name.

“A lot of people don’t get fresh water,” said Andrew Lee, an employee at the Subway located at 1005 W. University Ave. “It’s a good thing that money is being donated to provide the people in Kenya with fresh water.”

For 30 cents, one person can be supplied clean drinking water for one month. Subway committed to a total donation of $125,000.

Subway partnered with World Vision, a non-governmental provider of clean water, for the campaign.

World Vision can design and install a solar-powered water system with local partners with the full $125,000, according to a press release from Subway.

“We’re really excited to be doing this,” Kader said. “It’s not every day that you get to have a huge impact in people’s lives and actually save lives."
