Wendy’s locations all over Gainesville, including the Reitz Student Union, revealed a new grilled chicken sandwich that is made with antibiotic free chicken. Gainesville is one of four markets with the new chicken sandwich.

Gainesville residents are some of the first in the nation to try Wendy’s new and improved chicken.

The city is one of four test markets in which Wendy’s is introducing antibiotic-free chicken sandwiches to the menu, according to Frank Vamos, director of brand communications for the company.

He said it was seen as a good representation of national opinion.

The chicken raised without antibiotics is being offered in all menu items containing grilled chicken and also in Wendy’s new grilled chicken sandwich.

It has been in Gainesville since late July and will continue to be offered for a few months, Vamos said.

The new chicken option is also being tested in Orlando, Kansas City and Austin, he said.

According to the Wendy’s website, the antibiotic-free effort ensures animals are treated with more humane methods, which also helps keep the integrity of Wendy’s food.

For some students, like John Carlo Nuguid, an 18-year-old UF engineering freshman, it is a reminder of home.

"My cousins have a chicken farm back home (in the Philippines)," he said while waiting in the Reitz Union Wendy’s line. "There’s a different taste to it."

What happens to chickens raised with antibiotics is cruel, Nuguid said.

"So if you can find a way to raise chickens without drugs," he said, "it’s better."

Other students, like Mayu Mizutani, an 18-year-old UF environmental engineering freshman, said it is a way to ensure she is living up to her standards.

She said the new chicken would make her more inclined to visit Wendy’s.

"I’m pretty environmentally conscious," she said. "If you’re increasing the use of antibiotics in chickens, eventually diseases will become immune to them, and you’re just going to need more and more and stronger and stronger antibiotics. It’s only going to increase the problem."
