An 86-year-old man with Alzheimer’s disease was killed early Tuesday morning after a motorist struck him downtown.

At about 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, multiple Gainesville Police units arrived to the scene of the accident after the driver of a black Mazda called, saying she hit the man, Nathan Gambles, at the intersection of West University Avenue and Main Street, according to a media release.

The first GPD officer to arrive checked on the man, found he was not breathing and started performing CPR, according to the release.

The intersection was locked down, and Alachua County Fire Rescue Services took the man to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to the release.

A preliminary investigation found that the motorist was headed westbound on University Avenue when Gambles walked onto the road and directly into the car’s path, according to the release.

About a half an hour before the driver reported the crash, Gambles was reported missing by his family, and police were called to the 1300 block of NE Third Ave. to look for him, according to the release.

A GPD traffic-homicide investigation is now underway, according to the release. No charges have been pressed.
