Program supports Colombian woman

Debora Barros Fince is a mother of three. She is a lawyer. She is an artist.

She is also a member of the matriarchal Wayuu people indigenous to Colombia.

Fince shared her message through a translator with a crowd of about 50 Thursday at the Thomas Center.

Viva La Mujer: Honoring the Strength of Women, hosted by Bridges Across Borders, drew awareness to the plight of the indigenous people of Colombia.

Handmade artwork from the Wayuu tribe was on sale along with handmade dolls from India.

There was also a salsa and merengue dance party and a performance by Los Hermanitos Umoja, a local orchestra.

Carol Mosley, the USA director and co-founder of Bridges Across Borders, said the group chose to highlight women at the event because they are the ones who have to be the strongest during difficult times.

“Women have to rebuild no matter what,” she said. “They have to find a way to heal enough to raise their families, to restart their communities.”
