Despite soggy weekend weather, students were out on the town and utilizing Gainesville's new taxi stands.

The stands, put in place last week in front of Grog House on West University Avenue and across from Market Street Pub on Southwest First Avenue, are in service Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.

City Commissioner Jeanna Mastrodicasa, who pioneered the service over the summer, said she wanted to give more options to students who would rather not deal with a full Later Gator bus.

The stands could also help save cab companies money, said Jerome Williams of Unimet Taxicab Co.

"We're not out on the road wasting gas," Williams said.

"It gives us a place to park, and it benefits us a lot."

Erica Murray, a UF senior who took a cab Friday night, said she's willing to spend the cash for a safe way home.

"Money is an issue," she said. "But I love it."

Welcome to the discussion.
