The Gainesville City Commission selected Nicolle Shalley as the new city attorney.

Shalley, senior assistant attorney and Community Redevelopment Agency attorney for Gainesville, will now replace Marion Radson, who has held the city attorney position since 1986.

Commissioners voted during a meeting on Monday night. The candidates were not present.

The commission selected from a final pool of six candidates, which included Shalley, Jeffrey Sheffel, city attorney for Hollywood, Fla.; Vivien Monaco, assistant county attorney for Orange County; Daniel Nee, litigation attorney for Gainesville; David Schwartz, assistant county attorney for Alachua County; and Cherry Shaw, assistant general counsel for Jacksonville.

Brian FitzGerald, senior assistant county attorney for Hillsborough County, was a seventh candidate who withdrew from consideration.

Cheryl McBride, Gainesville human resources manager, said Mayor Craig Lowe will now negotiate a contract with Shalley.

Once a contract is decided, it will be sent back to the commission for approval.

“I’m quite confident that it will be successful and what will come back will be something I will favorably support,” said City Commissioner Randy Wells.

McBride said she hopes Shalley will begin her term within “two to three months.”
