Chivalry was resurrected on campus Wednesday night at an event put on by the Institute of Black Culture.

Enitan O. Bereola II, author and contemporary urban sophisticate, talked about college dating and discussed how vital communication is in relationships.

With a majority of courting happening via texting, Instagram likes and Facebook messages, Bereola said modern technology has weakened the communication channels between men and women.

“Texting is effortless, and women like effort,” he said.

He urged the crowd to rethink how they approach courting and dating in the 21st century.

The self-proclaimed contemporary gentleman encouraged students to embrace the variety and diversity on campus and to take advantage of the dating platform college offers.

“Determine what works best for you, embrace this learning experience, and be upfront with your intentions,” he said.

Bereola left the crowd with five communication tips and his top 10 do’s and don’ts for college dating with the No. 1 rule, “Don’t go through his or her phone.”

The communication and dating tips are included in his bestselling book “Bereolaesque: The Contemporary Gentleman and Etiquette Book for the Urban Sophisticate.”

Danisha Baro, a 20-year-old UF African-American studies and psychology junior, said it was refreshing to hear a man discuss dating that aligns with her personal morals.

“His dating protocol is something I want to practice when my time comes,” she said.
