Students could potentially lose their online subscriptions to The New York Times.

Student Government is deciding whether to renew The New York Times online subscription available to UF students. The subscription costs about $80,000, with $40,000 paid for by SG and $40,000 from the Office of the Provost. The subscription has been available online since October 2014.

UF Student Body treasurer Nicholas Carre said he is collecting usage data from the Office of the Provost to see how many students are using the subscriptions. About 6,000 students have signed up for a subscription, he said.

SG is most likely renewing the subscription this week, Carre said.

"Our contracts are about to be signed," he said.

Carre said once the subscription is renewed, he wants to do a marketing campaign.

"There’s a lot of students who don’t know about it," he said.

Giving students access to world news is one of the most important services SG provides, Carre said.

UF economics senior Steven Hollis wrote in an email that SG should continue providing this service to students.

"If students are more aware about topics, elections for instance, they may even start to pay more attention about news and elections going on around their own campus," the 21-year-old said.
