At the UF Senate Showcase on Thursday, senators encouraged students to participate in Student Government and reflected on the successes of the year.

Senate President Joseph Michaels began the event by discussing the main points of last year’s legislative agenda, which included approval of turning Newell Hall into a 24/7 study center, adding solar-powered tables around campus and funding for new bike repair stations for graduate and undergraduate housing.

“We accomplished the majority of our legislative agenda in the few months that we have been involved as a Senate executive board,” Michaels said.

Anthony Sorrentino, Senate Rules and Ethics Committee chairman, also discussed the Senate’s goal to increase student participation every semester.

Sorrentino also discussed the success of SG’s push toward involvement in community service.

He said members of SG have completed more than 300 hours of tabling, hosted or attended 10 community service projects and have gone to more than 400 student organization meetings.

The event concluded with Sorrentino encouraging students to participate in the slating process, where senators interview students for a chance to run on the election ticket for the upcoming year.

“Besides elections, besides holding a position, just your ideas, your involvement, your participation, that’s what keeps us going,” Sorrentino said.
