Five simple ways to be an animal rights advocate and make a difference

Animal rights advocacy can be for everyone.

Social media and news outlets detail the issues around us, but they usually overlook this important one: We are constantly fighting for human equality, but what about the animals we call our “best friends”? I consider myself an animal rights advocate. Of course there is more I could do, but there will always be more.

People sometimes ask me how they can become an animal rights advocate. Many people think of animal advocacy as what they see from some of the major animal rights organizations standing outside with a sign. While protesting is one form of help people can give, it is not the only route.

Animal advocacy can come in all forms. Some ways are more time-consuming and larger than others, but that does not mean the smaller forms of aid are not helpful. The following five items are simple ways anyone can help out animals:

Follow an organization like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. You do not necessarily have to join them — unless you want to — but even following their campaigns and the work they are currently doing is a great way to stay updated on the animal rights community.

Write, post and share. Social media is one of our generation’s biggest advantages for any type of campaigning. You may just be one person, but when each post you put out is going to more than 200 people, it can make a difference.

Convince your friends. I have had so many conversations with my friends about animal rights and probably didn’t convince half of the people I spoke to. However, all that matters is that you convince one person, because that one person will tell others.

Eat less meat. I am not trying to tell you burger-lovers to become vegans. I know that is not realistic. I am asking you to try to go one day without meat each week. As a vegetarian, I can tell you that a day without meat is not going to kill you. There are much cleaner sources of protein out there. You may not think one day per week will make a difference, but it does. Meatless Monday is a huge campaign that is trying to get people to go without meat for a day. This campaign has already reduced the amount of meat consumed in some areas.

Get involved on a local level. There are many organizations in Gainesville trying to make a difference for animals. UF has clubs like Vegan Eating for Gators and the Student Animal Alliance. Volunteering is also a great way to meet other people with similar interests — and meet cute animals.

I challenge you to try these five ways to help. They are all easy and fun — especially if you encourage your friends to do them with you. It all makes a difference, and you can help make that difference happen.
