Guest Column: Access Party calls on students to join party in Fall 2015 Student Government elections

My name is Kalyani Hawaldar, and I am your Access Party President. The beginning of September means the start of football season, but it also means the beginning of another Student Government election cycle.

In the Spring, as a grassroots campaign, Access Party was grounded in our hardworking candidates, dedicated volunteers and, most importantly, each and every one of you.

We listened.

We spoke.

And we fought for every Gator.

Thanks to all of you, we made history together. But our work was not over on election night.

Since then, Access Party has been dedicated to making SG accountable, accessible and affordable.

Our promises were not empty.

They were real.

Our executive branch ticket has been fighting to bring the change that you demanded and voted for in the Spring.

We’ve delivered on making campus an open place for every student regardless of background by allowing students from every area of campus to get involved in SG.

We’ve delivered on cutting wasteful spending by refusing salaries and eliminating wasteful programs that were not helping students.

We’ve delivered on transparency and accountability by having the most accessible administration in SG history.

We’ve delivered on college affordability by successfully lobbying for a yearlong textbook sales tax.

But we’re not done yet.

I am proud to be leading a team of student leaders that is dedicated to serving the Student Body. We at Access Party want you to be a part of this movement because we are for every Gator.

But we need your help.

We were able to win the executive ticket in the Spring thanks to everyday students taking a stand and fighting for change.

Everyday Gators who may not have ever voted in an SG election before or may never have thought they could make an impact on SG.

The Fall election is fast approaching, and the Student Senate is up for grabs. With your help, SG can finally be given back to the people it is supposed to serve: the students.

You have the chance to make a real difference at your university by running for Senate, getting involved in the campaign, signing up to volunteer or even just joining our email list.

The slating process for Senate candidates begins today.

Regardless of background, connections or organizational affiliation there is a place for you in our party.
