Eli Carter dribbles during Florida's 68-61 loss to No. 1 Kentucky on Feb. 7 in the O'Connell Center. Carter announced on Monday that he would transfer from UF.

The Florida men’s basketball team will be without redshirt junior Eli Carter next season, the university announced Monday.

Carter, who transferred to Florida from Rutgers in 2013 after his sophomore season, will graduate from UF at the end of the Spring semester and will be eligible to play immediately for whichever program he chooses.

The 6-foot-2 guard from Paterson, New Jersey, averaged 8.8 points and 2.0 assists per game last season. Despite early injuries to his foot , Carter played 28 games for the Gators in 2014-15, including 17 starts.

Carter appeared in seven games for Florida in the 2013-14 season before a right leg injury previously sustained at Rutgers caused him to sit out the remainder of the year.

Carter becomes the third Gator to leave the basketball program early following Florida's disappointing 16-17 record.

Michael Frazier opted to leave early for the NBA Draft on March 27 and sophomore Chris Walker chose to test the draft waters as well on Friday.
