The first round of the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., at the Yeamans Hall Course has come to an end, and the No. 17 Florida women’s golf team is sitting in the middle of the field in 14th place. The Gators finished the day at 9-over-par, which is 15 shots behind clubhouse leader Wake Forest. Coach Emily Glaser said, the teams score doesn’t echo how well the team played.

“There were a lot more positives today than what the score reflects, and I’m proud of the girls for finishing strong,” Glaser said in a release.

Leading the way for UF is sophomore Kelly Grassel who completed her round at even-par and is in a tie for 19th. It was the Gator debut for Grassel, who transferred to Florida after a year at Michigan State.

Fellow sophomore Karolina Vlckova finished her round at 1-over-par, as she sits in a tie for 31st place. Junior Ursa Orehek and senior Camilla Hedberg completed their first day at 4-over-par, as they sit in a tie for 66th. Freshman Taylor Tomlinson finished her first collegiate round at 5-over-par.

Play will continue today for the Gators with tee times scheduled for 11:55 a.m. UF struggled on the front nine as they only had one birdie, but Florida bounced back on the back nine and had five birdies and an eagle. Glaser said she hopes the team can continue the momentum into the second round of play.

“I think we got a little ahead of ourselves out of the gate this morning and we weren’t executing very well on the front nine,” Glaser said. “After we calmed down a bit, we played more solid on the back nine. Hopefully, we can carry that momentum through the rest of the tournament.”
