Alumni return to Gainesville for Alligator anniversary

Former and current staff members of the Alligator celebrated the newspaper's second century Friday and Saturday.

UF and Alligator alumni from across the country came back to the newsroom on West University Avenue for an open house Friday night.

On Saturday, the group reconvened at The Holiday Inn on Newberry Road for a day of speeches and presentations.

Ron Sachs, president of Ron Sachs Communications and former Alligator editor, told the story of the Alligator's route to independence from UF in the '70s.

Ian Johnson, reporter for the Berlin bureau of The Wall Street Journal and former Alligator reporter and editor, spoke about his reporting experience in China and subsequent Pulitzer Prize.

John Moran, Florida's official nature photographer in 2006 and former Alligator photographer, presented his favorite photographs from his book, "A Journal of Light: The Visual Diary of a Florida Nature Photographer."

As the keynote speaker of the banquet Saturday night, Dennis Kneale, a former Alligator editor who recently accepted a job as an editor at CNBC, spoke about the evolution of newspapers.
