Phillips Center filled with Latin beats at free concert for heritage month

The audience in the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Friday night wiggled and shook their hips to salsa and Reggaeton music in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The concert, organized by the Hispanic Student Association's committee for Hispanic Heritage Month, featured Umoja Orchestra, Los Primeros, Puerto Rican Power and Fulanito.

The concert cost a little more than ,45,000.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2007, Student Government Productions and Volunteers for International Student Affairs funded the event.

People waited in line in the rain more than an hour before tickets were available to be picked up. Jesse B. Wright, executive director of Hispanic Heritage Month 2007, said the show was sold out.

"This year, our mission was to create an unparalleled Hispanic Heritage Month," Wright said. "This concert helped instill that."

Umoja Orchestra and Los Primeros were the first two acts of the concert leading up to the main acts, Puerto Rican Power and Fulanito.

When Puerto Rican Power performed, almost the entire audience was out of their seats and dancing in couples.

Ashley Alvarez, a senior at Buchholz High School, danced along with the rest of the audience at the event.

She said the concert helped her connect with the Hispanic community.

"I'm glad it's free and we're able to have more culture available to us," Alvarez said. "This reunites all Hispanics. It doesn't matter where we're from."
