In response to UF's proposed budget cuts of ,34 million, the Cost Reduction and Efficiency Task Force proposed several solutions to save money and bring in extra revenue.
The proposals included charging students ,10 for transcript copies, requiring non-Florida-resident graduate students to become residents and selling underused UF vehicles.
Despite some concern at Thursday's committee meetings of UF's Board of Trustees about the small scale of the cuts, UF President Bernie Machen said he was optimistic the first phase of the cuts would be successful.
"It was described yesterday as picking the low-hanging fruit, which is fine," he said at a strategic discussion with the board Friday morning. "I think that was a good way to start."
He said the first phase of the proposed cuts would be from the Educational and General portion of the budget, which makes up about 20 percent of UF's total budget.
"We can think a little bigger, dig a little deeper and maybe make some significant progress," Machen said. "This is not something we should be scared of."
Dianna Morgan, chair of the board, said she and the rest of the trustees were ready to stand behind Machen and the cuts.
"This is about charting our own destiny," Morgan said.
