The '80s brought forth a slew of unforgettable fashion pieces: jelly shoes, mesh shirts, plastic bangles and, of course, the dreaded scrunchie. There are certainly a few trends from that decade that need not be recycled.

But one of the things '80s fashion did so well was work with a kaleidoscope of bright and bold colors.

It remains the most vivid era in fashion to date, and it's this inspiration that brings us our latest '80s revival: colored denim.

This trend was sported by a multitude of celebrities in '07 but has failed to make it to everyday wear.

So for those who want to brighten their wardrobe and spunk up their style with a pair of colored jeans, here are some tips on how to bring the vibrant style down to earth:

Purple jeans are my pick of the colored denim. Purple's not just an interesting color choice for denim but for boots, dresses and tights, too. When mixed in with neutral colors like beige and white, purple pieces pop, but aren't so bold that you end up looking clownish.

Keep the purple denim balanced by choosing a casual tee and neutral-hued shoes.

Red denim is another cool alternative to your favorite baby blues. The color combo of red and black is undeniably chic. Pair a black tank and black flats with your red jeans to keep the look casual enough for everyday wear. And if you're daring, add a black leather bomber jacket to the mix.

Try to stick to skinny or boot-cut jeans when testing out the colored trend. Flared or wide-leg jeans are best left in the blue palette. Celebrities like to wear their colored denim with platform heels, but while that looks hot on the red carpet, it's highly impractical for the everyday wear of a college student. Stick to flats, boots or even flip-flops.

But beware of taking the trend into dangerous territory. There are some jeans colors that can't ever be balanced out by the other pieces you wear with them. Stay away from pink, green or anything neon. The key is to keep the look understated.

As long as you accentuate but don't embellish the jeans, you're sure to pull your inspiration from the '80s while maintaining the currency of '08.
