Although its overall quality of play has fallen, the UF men’s golf team remains tied for 10th place after its second day of action.

The Gators finished Saturday 19-over, posting a two round total of 589 (290-299, +29) at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in Chicago.

“Today was a little disappointing,” coach Buddy Alexander said. “The course played harder today and we had a chance to make up some ground but we just weren’t able to do it.”

Stanford sits atop the leaderboard with a score of 559 (-1) and is the only team within the 15-team field to shoot under par. Second-place Oklahoma State finished Saturday a distant 11 strokes back.

Ohio State and Notre Dame are the two other squads tied with Florida for 10th.

After an impressive first round shooting two-under, junior T.J. Vogel finished with a two-over 72 and recorded a birdie against three bogeys.

Vogel sits tied for fourth place individually, four strokes behind Cameron Wilson of Stanford.

Junior Tyler McCumber posted a three-over 73 for the second consecutive day, with one birdie and 13 pars fueling his consistent play.

Freshman J.D. Tomlinson ended at six-over, while senior Michael Furci and junior Tommy Mou carded a 78 and 79, respectively.

In all, the Gators recorded six birdies, 24 bogeys and five double bogeys.

Even after UF’s disappointing second round, Alexander said he hopes his team will close out with a strong Sunday performance.

“We’ll keep battling and hopefully tomorrow will be a better day,” he said.
