According to recent UF graduate Nicole Cannon, vintage is back and better than ever.

Cannon has expressed her love for vintage clothing since she was 16. She developed this unique sense of style in her sophomore year of high school, when she began to realize that none of the clothes in stores fit her taller frame quite right.

“The clothes I’d buy weren’t appropriate for school or auditions because I was just starting to get into theater,” Cannon said. “My theater teacher, who was really into costuming and vintage clothing, referred me to thrift stores to find better pieces for my wardrobe.”

Cannon explained how she stumbled upon really unique pieces for really cheap.

“I was able to assemble a wardrobe so much faster because it was so much cheaper than buying retail,” Cannon said.

As her style journey began, Cannon said she found many unique pieces at thrift stores and began to put them together in different ways to create her own wardrobe.

Cannon’s inspiration for her style stemmed from her research on old movies from the golden age of Hollywood. Most of this inspiration came from the women of the 1940s and 1950s, such as Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable and, of course, none other than the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

“I just think (Monroe) wore clothes so beautifully and had such a beautiful style. It was simple but sexy but not overly provocative,” Cannon said.

Cannon maintains a belief that there is still a place for vintage clothing in today’s fashion. She is most excited by the “blast from the past” that is the high-waisted trend, as well as the classic little black dress, pant suits and rompers.

“I also love the high-waisted cigarette pants…. high-waisted skinny jean, only less skinny at the ankle. I love a good pencil skirt - always a classic!”

Essentially, she believes that there is a less-is-more quality of style making a comeback into fashion with classics such as the one-piece. Looks that leave a little more to the imagination are a returning trend.

“It’s less about what you wear and actually about how you wear the clothes that makes your style stand out,” said Cannon.

She incorporates her vintage inspiration into her everyday style by working parts and pieces, like vintage accessories and jewelry, into each outfit. Accessories may include a vintage scarf, purse or pair of shoes. Cannon will peruse stores like Target and Old Navy for items with a vintage-styled silhouette or pattern, and go from there with her more special pieces.

“I’ll use that as a base for the outfit and add all the other vintage accessories on top of it to give it a much more understated, casual, but still vintage look to it,” said Cannon.
