Gainesville man struck and killed by a pickup truck in Newberry

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident

An 81-year-old Gainesville man died after he was hit by a truck Saturday afternoon in Newberry. 

The driver, an 85-year-old man in a white Ford pickup truck, was backing out of a cattle field  near the 21200 block of West Newberry Road by Coleman’s Plumbing, when he struck the 81-year-old man at about 3:21 p.m., according to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by fire rescue crews, according to the release.

FHP is investigating the incident and no more information is available as of Monday afternoon.  

The traffic homicide investigation will likely take 60 to 90 days to complete, FHP spokesperson Lt. Patrick Riordan said.
