After a 15 month long hiatus, pop-punk show Emo Night returns to Gainesville with a full capacity show Saturday.
The producer and DJ of the event Vijaya Seixas created the night for those who were eager to hear the pop-punk classics they listened to growing up.
This Emo Night, in particular, combined visual and musical elements to create a unique show and dance party. The night featured the live performer Saddy Daddy, who sang, screamed and danced to the DJ’s music.
The event emphasized emo and pop-punk songs and only played throwback songs such as A Day To Remember’s “The Downfall Of Us All,” Paramore’s “Misery Business,” Metro Station’s “Shake It,” and Panic! At The Disco’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.”
Tristyn Morgan, a third-year UF psychology major, was eagerly waiting for the show to start and said he was glad to be back at one of his favorite events.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been able to go out and do anything, so it’s the first big thing back for me so I’m excited to get back into it and have fun for the night,” Morgan said.
There were no COVID-19 restrictions for Emo Night, and masks were not required.
To Seixas, it was the right time to bring the event back because he said he didn’t want to hold back on the essentials of the event.
“We didn’t want to do it under strict circumstances because that’s just not how the party works,” Seixas said.
Seixas explained that moshing and jumping around is fundamental to a night like this, so having COVID-19 restrictions wouldn’t work for this type of event.
“It’s a very physical event,” Seixas said. “People are jumping on top of each other, running into each other; there’s no reason to do a worse version of it just to do it. We’d rather just wait. And do it properly.”
Izabella Pino, a third-year anthropology and business major at UF, said it was her first time at Emo Night.
Pino said Emo Night was something she felt obligated to attend since the music played was important throughout her youth.
Many attendees, including Pino, were dressed in black clothing, band T-shirt and fishnets to fit the event’s aesthetic.
“My middle school self is thriving right now,” she said. “This is what I thought I looked like in middle school, so the fact that I’m here living it and in full fruition is kind of cool. My first concert was Sleeping with Sirens and Pierce the Veil, so for me, I had to come. It’s been a good time so far. I’ve really enjoyed my time.”
The annual event will resume once a month. The next Emo Night is June 26. Tickets can only be purchased at the door.
