Olympic baseball is in the books and another former Gator will return home with a silver medallion.
Catcher Mark Kolozsvary and Team USA were shut down 2-0 by Olympic hosts Japan on Saturday morning. The Stars and Stripes finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.
America finished in second place for the first time in Olympic baseball and the silver is USA’s fourth medal in the last five competitions. The team won gold in 2000 then bronze in both 1996 and 2008.
Former Florida attendee Mark Kolozsvary started six games behind the plate and caught all 54 innings for the USA. Kolozsvary posted an impressive .983 fielding percentage on defense after only committing a single error.
The catcher was unable to stay consistent with a bat in his hands, however. Kolozsvary went 4-for-21 at the plate with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base for Team USA.
Kolozsvary is the last Gator to participate in the Tokyo games and wraps up the UF Olympic medal count to a total of 17, including nine golds.
The former Gator returns home to continue his professional career with the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts.
