Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Florida Keys on Sunday morning around 9 a.m. as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds up to 130 mph, according to CNN. Irma made a second landfall in Marco Island with winds of 120 mph as a Category 3 around 3:30 p.m. 

Gainesville is now in a Hurricane Warning. UF classes have now been canceled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. 

UF will open a second shelter at Southwest Recreation Center, which will open Sunday at 10 a.m. It has a capacity of 2,000 and a no re-entry policy.

The shelter at Steinbrenner Band Hall is full, at maximum capacity of 200. 


Florida’s first home football game, which was set for noon Saturday against Northern Colorado, is now canceled. The game will not be rescheduled because the teams do not share an open date for the rest of the season.


UF classes have been canceled Friday through Wednesday.

UF’s dining services will continue regular hours until Saturday evening. Certain halls will be open Sunday and Monday, with details to be announced.

Santa Fe College classes have been canceled Friday through Monday.

Alachua County Public Schools have canceled classes Friday through Tuesday.

Oak Hall School will be closed Friday through Monday.

Saint Leo’s Gainesville Education Center is closed through Sunday.


The Alachua County Courthouse will remain open Friday.

UF anticipates opening two shelters for students, faculty and their families, with details to be finalized and announced Friday.

Alachua County Emergency Management plans to open at least two shelters Friday at 10 a.m. —one at the Easton-Newberry Archery Center, located at 24880 NW 16th Ave., and one specifically for residents with special needs at the Senior Recreation Center, located at 5701 NW 34th Blvd.

Alachua County Waste Services will remain open during normal business hours.

Alachua County Library will close Saturday, Sunday and Monday.


On campus shelters:

FULL: The Steinbrenner Band Hall will be available as a shelter starting 10 a.m. on Sunday. Students need a Gator One ID and guests need to be accompanied by someone with a Gator One. 

Southwest Recreation Center is another on-campus shelter. It is not pet friendly and people should bring their own bedding.

UF Health Shands Hospital will remain open 24/7.

The small and large animal hospitals at UF will remain open for emergency service. UF's veterinary hospital will close for routine appointments on Sunday and reopen Tuesday. 

UF Health Physicians will be open on Friday but closed on Monday. Appointments are being rescheduled. 

UF Health Shands outpatient services will be open Friday. A decision will be made Friday morning about whether to reschedule Monday's appointments. 

UF College of Dentistry's clinic will be closed on Monday.

All SIMED locations will be closed Monday.


On campus, open from Friday to Saturday:

Beaty Pod will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Fresh Food Company and Gator Corner Dining Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

Graham POD/Chomp It will be open 24 hours for the two days

Moe's Southwest Grill will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Rawlings POD/Subway will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. 

Reitz Union Food Court is closed.

All buildings will close when winds become too strong.
