UF President Bernie Machen announced Tuesday that planning is under way for two new buildings in Innovation Square.

Innovation Square is a 10-year plan to bring science, business opportunities and technology together in one central area. It will consist of business, research and living areas as a hub for new ideas.

The community, which will be on Southwest Second Avenue, is expected to create 3,000 new jobs.

“Clearly, Innovation Square is becoming the vital, productive and vibrant area we envisioned,” Machen said in a statement.

One of the planned buildings, the Infusion Technology Center, will include custom-built laboratories, research and high-tech space.

The other building will be a residence hall specifically geared to entrepreneurial-minded students.

The Infusion Technology Center is expected to be open by late 2012. The dorm does not have a set date.
