Gainesville Police arrested a local woman early Sunday morning after police said she threatened her roommate with a machete.

At about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Jamaice Monique Thomas, 18, and a few of her family members argued with Thomas’ roommate in the 3000 block of Southwest Archer Road, according to a police report.

When the roommate walked out of her apartment, Thomas’ mother went to talk with her. Scared for her mother’s safety, Thomas followed her outside with other family members, according to the report.

Thomas then swung at her roommate with a serrated machete and missed, according to the report.

A witness said the family was yelling at the roommate inside the apartment. However, according to the report, Thomas said it was her roommate who began the argument.

Thomas denied using a machete and could not be reached for comment as of press time.

Police charged Thomas with aggravated assault and took her to the Alachua County Jail where she was released later on Sunday on a $15,000 bond.
