There are an infinite number of nonprofit organizations, and many of them host 5Ks or walks and other events that rely on the goodwill of others to participate and raise awareness for their cause. Because you are already exercising anyway, why not lend a hand? Most of the time, the events do not require a large fee to participate, and the money is being used for a good cause. You will also be surrounded by a diverse group of people in different stages of health, who are working for the same thing you are. The process of preparing and participating is a simple one, and I’m here to walk you through it.
Once a year, you are supposed to go visit the doctor and get a check-up, just to make sure everything is working properly. Once in a while (more than once a year) you should do a mental check-up on your exercise regime, just to make sure it is working for you. Now that the summer is reaching a close, your schedule is going to change. Classes start, clubs get rolling, and time seems to become a mythical creature. At this point, it is time to take a step back and evaluate what worked, what did not work, and how you can adapt to the coming school year.
Sometimes you have no choice. When you are home and it’s raining or you need a short 30-minute workout, you end up alone, and that is perfectly OK. Sometimes we use that time to think about the mysteries of the universe. But once in a while it is beneficial to work out with someone else, or even in a group. It forces us to keep going in “competition” with our friends and it can be fun too. There are a couple ways to get this group workout, maybe ways that you have not thought of yet. That’s what I am here for!
You are sitting on the couch watching Regina George eat fattening granola bars for the ten thousandth time (you can never watch "Mean Girls" too many times) when suddenly, the craving for your favorite snack strikes. Whether it’s potato chips, an ice cream sundae, or McDonald’s French fries, you have got it bad. And the worst part? The cravings usually are not even in the realm of foods you should be eating. So what do you do? Sit and suffer? Wrong! Here is a list of some popular cravings and the healthy way to alleviate them.
Usually when you go on vacation you want to sleep in, go to bed late and eat lots of food that you really should not be eating. Yes, I say this from experience. Few people that I know, even the most health conscious, will go somewhere like Italy and turn down gelato. You also would not go to Chicago and turn down a deep-dish pizza. The problem is that we tend to fall into a pattern on vacation that we cannot break easily when we get home. So instead of cutting out all the yummy foods or forcing yourself to wake up early, here are some away-from-home exercise tips.
So you are at the gym one day when you decide to head to the weight room. It can’t hurt, right? And of course, it can’t be that hard. But you enter the room and the guy to girl ratio is about 10 to 1 and everyone looks like they know what they are doing. So you decide to head out and maybe just do some pushups. It has happened to me before; walking into that room intimidates me more than I care to admit. But if you want to look toned in sleeveless shirts and be able to lift heavy boxes, you cannot neglect lifting weights and its benefits.
Summer is here ladies and gentleman, and with it are the cute dresses, too short shorts, and revealing bathing suits. Inevitably, the first question we ask ourselves is “do I look good in this?” Answers may vary. But what do you do when the answer is “no”? Take a good, hard look at yourself and picture (realistically) what you would like to see in the future. But where do you start? We all know exercise is important. In fact, it is fundamental to being in good shape. But to lose a little bit of that extra fat, we need to turn to the kitchen.
It happens all the time: you figure out how to burn the belly fat through some new, innovative exercise routine. Two weeks later, there has hardly been a change. Sometimes, it is difficult to find the truth amid all the lies. How do you find the time to search through all the data available and compare notes to find the facts? Well I am here to tell you which of the most common exercise sayings are complete malarkey.
So you need to get to class fast. Or work. Walking is just not going to be quick enough. So, you grab your skateboard from the corner of the room, run down the stairs, and hit the hills of Gainesville as you weave through the crowd of students also rushing to class. This, of course, is just my vision. Skateboarding takes practice. It is also a great source of exercise. So my first thought was ‘when do we get started?’
In the year 2013, it is common knowledge that most people have the attention span of a 3-year-old. Things just fail to interest us after five minutes. When it comes to exercise, this is a problem. How are we supposed to get an hour of exercise at least four times a week when we can’t stand more than a few minutes of each move? I am here to help.
It happens every year: you promise yourself that you’re going to eat right, exercise once a day and just be so healthy that when you get home everyone will be talking about how you are positively glowing with fitness. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
