With graduation approaching, there are only a couple of weeks to finish the bucket list you made as a freshman. In addition to crossing off those activities, there is also a limited amount of time to go to those Gainesville places we crave so much when we are away from campus.

As a freshman living in Jennings, I missed home cooked meals.

After spending 17 years in school your brain can feel burnt out once college graduation hits. It can be hard to jump right into more schooling or a full-time job position immediately. Taking a gap year, a year off, between starting the next chapter of your life has become a popular option among college graduates.

Where to start is one of the hardest parts of searching for a job. While the internet has opened an entirely new method of access to the job market, it has also made the process a lot more complicated. The job openings section of a newspaper is now transformed into a web search that produces so many opportunities. The searching is a job within itself and overwhelming. As a senior, I have been involved in this search process all year. A lot of the searches are trial and error based. Sometimes potential matches come up and other times the match is nothing close to what you want to pursue.

No matter how old we get, there is something behind dressing up for a party that never gets old. Halloween is not the only excuse to put on a costume for a party. Throwing a themed event is a simple way to get your guests into a certain mood without putting too much thought or effort into the rest of the party. Costumes immediately help guests start talking because chatter about where certain costumes or clothing materials were purchased begin as well as compliments and competition on who has dressed to the theme the best.

Senior spring semester revolves around going out and completing bucket lists, but sometimes those events have to be put on hold when real life kicks in. For seniors seeking jobs, spring semester is full of searching, applying and interviewing.

The one time I wish my mother were closer is when I am sick. While my roommates and friends are great about offering to pick me up medicines or orange juice they don’t come close to having a mom nearby to wait on my every need. Making my own tea and soup isn’t comparable to how it tastes when my mom makes it for me when I am sick at home. Unfortunately, getting sick in college is inevitable even for those with strong immune systems. Here are some ways to feel more at home while fighting off illness.

Although UF doesn’t offer leisure courses for credit anymore, they still exist. The Reitz Union offers a set of leisure courses every semester for a discounted student rate. Options include dance from ballroom dancing to wedding dancing for couples, sports like golf and bowling, meditation, beginning guitar, arts and crafts ranging from pottery to jewelry making, and finally home bartending.

An 8-year-old once told me, “A celebration is a celebration.” A 21st birthday is no exception to this statement. Turning 21 is a rite of passage in college and tasting that first legal sip of alcohol is a momentous occasion. There are multiple routes to take when planning a 21st birthday in Gainesville.

Getting invited to a Super Bowl is almost equally important and American as watching the Super Bowl. The event isn’t just about the two best teams in football squaring off. It is about where you are watching, with what company and what food is being served. College students aren’t equipped with the biggest venue or budget to throw a huge soiree, but over my college years I have hosted a successful Super Bowl party.

A senior spring schedule is unlike any other semester’s schedule. If you are planning on graduating on time, it is the final semester to ensure all of the credits needed to walk across the stage are completed. There are different types of seniors in various situations at the start of spring.

Completing my first last day of school was scary. When I woke up in the morning, I ensured I timed my walk to class, prayed the textbook wasn’t mandatory and searched for familiar faces. It felt like my first time in a classroom even though it was the last time I had to experience the gut-wrenching feeling associated with the first day of school.

Going home for Thanksgiving has changed throughout my college years.

Gainesville has more to offer than a university and a football team. Just outside the bubble of campus there are plenty of attractions and sights to see while in college. Here are some places that you should get to before time runs out.

Sometimes I forgot how much there is to do on campus outside of going to class.

The freshman 15 every senior in high school is warned about doesn’t stop after freshmen year. As Abbie Dorwart pointed out in her blog last week, there are so many ways to balance eating and working out. Unfortunately, this struggle continues throughout college.

There are a lot of routine activities that have changed from the time I was a freshman. What seemed like the cool thing to do then is definitely not always what is considered the “in” thing to do now. Of course, I have upgraded from the simple typical freshmen things like studying in the dorm’s library or doing laundry in communal machines, but other standards have changed over my time on campus, too.

I have traveled all over the SEC to watch the Gators play, but there is nothing like a game day in the Swamp. The campus transforms overnight into a sea of orange and blue where tailgating at 10 a.m. is normal and greeting strangers with a hearty “Go Gators!” is customary.

It’s that time of year again when having four classes seems like the end the world. It seems as if teachers within the same department have no communication skills and schedule his or her exams on the same day, back-to-back. If you are lucky enough to have them one day apart, it is hard enough to remember what information is for what class. Study guides become never ending and the readings neglected for the first month of school finally come back to haunt you when the teacher announces you will be held liable for them.

The start of this fall semester begins the first of the lasts for the class of 2013. Even though it has only been one month, plenty of lasts have already happened, including the first last day of school for the fall semester.
