Ron Hamer, 64, enjoys chicken noodle soup at St. Francis House in downtown Gainesville, which provides cold night services for the homeless. Hamer dropped out of high school in 11th grade and went to work for a local Birmingham radio station, WZZK. When his mother died in 1996, he lost her house and found himself living on the streets.

Children offer treats to 6-year-old therapy horse Gracie the Clydesdale at the “Meet A Clydesdale” event at the Newberry branch of the Alachua County Library. The horse's owner, 22-year-old UF veterinary student Kim Fiore, says Gracie weighs 1,400 pounds and eats an average of 50 pounds of food each day.

Los Angeles-based rapper Ty Dolla $ign, an artist in Wiz Khalifa's label Taylor Gang Entertainment, puts on a show for students at Gator Growl 2018. Cavallo, a UF biology sophomore with a minor in Jewish history, said, "We will survive, we will continue on and we won't let terror stop us from...doing what we need to do." A sign aims to inspire those who pass through the doors at St. Francis House in downtown Gainesville. The shelter provided cold night services, including blankets and hot meals, on Wednesday when the temperatures dipped into the low 30s.

Taking advantage of cold night shelter services provided by St. Francis House, Ron Hamer, 64, brings his belongings inside for the evening. Hamer has been living on the streets of Gainesville for the last three weeks and is currently trying to save money for an apartment. In the past, Hamer received medical assistance for management of pain due to spinal stenosis and found himself addicted to the opioids used in his treatment. He is proud to say that he has been clean for the past six years.
