Farmers to Families Food Box
Volunteers help unload pallets full of food boxes. The food was received from the Farmers to Families Food Box initiative under the USDA, part of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, and helps get free, fresh and local food on people’s tables. They had 750 boxes of fruits and vegetables to give away.

Hanan Walters, a recent University of Florida graduate with a degree in economics, loads boxes into the trunk of a car. Walters is an active member of the Lubavitch Chabad Jewish Center of Gainesville and frequented the weekly Friday dinners, and spent the afternoon of July 16 volunteering to haul boxes and direct traffic at the drive-through food drive.

Rabbi Berl Goldman helped load boxes of free fruits and vegetables into cars of community members. “We need to share the spirit and energy of giving,” he said. “People need help. Serving during happy times is exciting and positive but serving during a pandemic is what we are called to do. People need hope.”

Steven Slutsky, a University of Florida professor of economics, volunteered as part of the effort to distribute boxes of food. Slutsky has volunteered at other initiatives the Lubavitch Chabad Jewish Center of Gainesville has undertaken, like when they gave away 50,000 masks.
