Recently, a lot of attention has been paid to rising income inequality in the U.S., especially among the top 1 percent of income earners. The reason for this fact is clear: Globalization and mass media have increased the returns to productivity, and the market has rewarded these people accordingly.

In a recent response column to my piece on Social Security, the writer suggested that I came from a wealthy background and loved to walk all over the poor to get ahead.

A few weeks ago, presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry called Social Security a Ponzi scheme and was labeled as a far-right extremist. While his choice of words was indelicate, Social Security is a deeply flawed system that will not exist in its current form for anyone in college right now.

In 1913, the U.S. adopted the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, which created the income tax as a permanent source of revenue for our government. The growth of the income tax both in importance and complexity has rewarded generations of graduates of UF's Fischer School of Accounting.

Currently, our country is in the middle of an intense debate on the nature of entitlement programs for present and future generations. This summer, I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa to see how their social programs and regulations function.

The administration of the Warrington College of Business Administration recently announced its plans to do away with managerial economics, a long-required course for many majors in the business college. Instead of working odd jobs, getting an internship or taking classes this summer like a normal college student, I decided to go to the Middle East. I spent the majority of my time in the West Bank, even though the U.S. Department of State advised to stay clear of the Palestinian territories. What I saw has completely changed my views and understanding of American foreign policy in the Middle East.

Even as a naïve freshman, I have already been exposed to far more Student Government politics than anyone would ever want to know. Ever since the "green means go" scandal in which several members of the Gator Party were implicated for fixing interviews so that only individuals with select organizational affiliations would be selected, I have been interested in discovering what really goes on in SG elections.

I have wanted to become involved in student politics ever since I arrived at UF last fall. But when I got here, I had no idea that UF had different political parties, like Orange and Blue, Gator or Unite.
