Eddie Thomas, an 85-year-old United States Air Force veteran and Gainesville resident, performs a three-volley salute Monday with other members of the Korean War Veterans Association, Inc. Thomas served from December 1954 to January 1956. “I always enjoy this and it means a lot to help remember the guys that gave their lives and anyone who is still serving,” he said.

Ray Davis, an 80-year-old Gainesville resident and a retired master sergeant in the United States Army, salutes the flag Monday during the Memorial Day Ceremony 2019 at Forest Meadows Memorial Park East. Davis is a member of The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and has reenacted with the Revolutionary War-era clothing for 18 years. Davis recited “A Toast to the Flag” by John J. Daly followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. “The flag is the very emblem of our nation. And who are we as a nation? The greatest nation in the history of mankind,” he said.

Dennis Nickerson, a 78-year-old High Springs resident who served in both the United States Coast Guard and as a Navy veteran, salutes Monday while 16-year-old Jayden Tanner and other members of the Buchholz High School Marching Band perform the “Taps” bugle call. “I do it every year. Automatic,” Nickerson said when asked why he wanted to come out to the Memorial Day celebration.

Andrew Picklo, a 24-year-old firefighter EMT, trains with the engine ladder outside of Station 1. The firefighters took part in a time trial to see how quickly they could inspect the engine and maneuver the ladder as close to the top of the street light as possible.

Gunnar Piner, a 28-year-old firefighter EMT and driver, helps start the flow of fluids into a patient’s arm who is being transported to the hospital in an ambulance. The woman’s heartbeat was fluctuating and during the transit she asked another paramedic, Andrew Picklo, “I ain’t gonna die, am I?” Picklo then reassured her while working to steady her condition, “No ma'am, you’re not going to die.”

Main St. The Alachua County Commission declared May 19 through May 25 to be Emergency Medical Services Week in Alachua County, Florida on May 14 to recognize the value and accomplishments of those in the emergency medical field.
