Editorial: New year, same gang of American idiots

The ringing in of the new year brings with it several cherished traditions: the outbreak of mirth, merry, renewed commitments to being a better human being, the joyful return of children and young adults to school… the takeover of a federal wildlife refuge by an armed militia in Oregon? Gadzooks!

Column: Resolutions for reflection

Culling through everything I’ve read about the new year, articles usually include two things: resolutions and motivational quotes meant to inspire readers to follow through with said resolutions for at least a month. These articles don’t exactly represent creative and original ways to look at the new year, but you know what they say. “You can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.”

Column: New year, new column, new books

Happy January! It’s the beginning of a new year and a new semester. Here’s to saying goodbye to Winter Break, a glorious time of rest, relaxation and stuffing myself with home-cooked food. It was good while it lasted. Does anyone else feel decidedly underprepared for this semester? Coming to school in the fall often feels exciting and full of promise, but the (semi) cold, dreary air of spring has a habit of sucking the enthusiasm for school right out of me. Luckily, there are ways to stay positive about rolling out of bed and trundling to class this week.

A look at 2016 District 4 Commission and mayoral candidates

The qualifying period for Spring 2016 Gainesville District 4 Commission and mayoral Elections ended over Winter Break, finalizing the candidates running for office. For mayor, incumbent Ed Braddy is up against former city commissioner Lauren Poe and Gainesville resident Donald Shepherd Sr. Running for District 4 City Commissioner are Gainesville residents Jim Konish and Adrian Hayes-Santos. Current District 4 Commissioner Randy Wells is finishing his term limit. Voting takes place March 15 during the Presidential Preference Primary & City of Gainesville Election. Here are the candidates’ platforms:
