Notebook: Linebacker leaves Gators, top recruit commits to UF

Redshirt junior linebacker Jeremi Powell will not finish his career as a member of the Gators.

Powell is no longer a part of the program after an injury-plagued career with Florida. GatorCountry first reported that Powell was no longer on the team, which was later confirmed by the Gators.

The Largo native’s decision to end his Florida career leaves Florida’s already thin linebacking corps with just six scholarship linebackers on the roster.

Powell — a four star recruit and a top 250 player in the country coming out of high school according to 247Sports — played in 10 games this season, starting two, and had 11 tackles.

During his time at Florida, he played in 25 games and registered 21 career tackles.

He is expected to graduate in May and has one season of eligibility left. With that in mind, he may look to transfer to another program.

Four-star defensive tackle picks UF:

Florida added another talented piece to its 2016 recruiting class via the commitment of four-star defensive tackle Shavar Manuel.

Manuel announced his decision through his Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon, only one minute after coach Jim McElwain had tweeted his usual "#ChompChomp," signaling the commitment of a new recruit.

The Tampa native brings size and versatility as a 6-foot-4, 290 pound defensive line prospect out of Bradenton’s IMG Academy.

Ranked as the No. 42 player in the nation by the 247Sports Composite, Manuel is currently the second highest-rated prospect in this class for the Gators, behind only quarterback Feleipe Franks. His commitment boosted UF’s recruiting class up to No. 6 in the country, according to 247Sports, and comes on the heels of an appearance in the Under Armour All-America game this past Saturday.

Manuel joins a trio of defensive ends to bring the total number of defensive linemen in the class to four. As of now, he is the lone defensive tackle.
